VPIS - Veterinary Poisons Information Service

Animal PoisonLine

In September 2016, the Veterinary Poisons Information Service launched a pilot helpline for pet owners. Following feedback from veterinary practices, we have decided to separate the services to reflect the different advice we give to owners compared to vets.

Animal PoisonLine, our new service for pet owners, will launch at 9am on 10th April 2017.

This will be a triage service, which will let owners know if a trip to their vet is required. We will serve as the first point of call for owners concerned that their pet may have been exposed to something that could potentially be poisonous.

The line will be open 24 hours a day. Calls will cost £20 from 8am to 8pm on Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays), and £30 outside these hours. Owners will not be advised on specific treatment.

If the owner is recommended to see their vet, the practice should call the VPIS for further advice, as required. Please note that practice recalls following an Animal PoisonLine inquiry will be charged as a new case, due to the in depth advice provided.

Vets should continue to use the normal number 0207 3055 055 for their poisoning cases and admin enquiries.

Owners will be directed to the new Animal PoisonLine number 01202 509 000. You may
want to include this number in your Out of Hours answerphone message.

Our members will receive promotional posters and stickers, with details of the new Animal PoisonLine number and website, which can be used to inform clients of the new service. Stickers can be placed in vaccination cards, puppy/kitten packs or given to the owners to keep in a safe place at home. You may also download the poster here

If you did not receive our initial email announcement on the 28th March 2017, this may mean you are not part of our mailing list. If you wish to subscribe to our newsletters, and keep up to date with the latest news on animal poisoning and services, please send your email address to admin@vpisglobal.com with the title “Subscribe”. You may also contact us via this email to request further Animal PoisonLine posters and stickers.

If you have any questions regarding Animal PoisonLine, please contact VPIS Head of Service Nicola Robinson at nicola.robinson@vpisglobal.com.

We shall continue to support veterinary practices to ensure that poisoned animals are given the very best care possible. We would like to thank our members for their continued support over the past 25 years.
